Any battle worth fighting for has its share of ups and downs—weight loss is no exception. When challenging feelings surface, the trick is to remain positive and to avoid beating yourself up. If things start to get a little crazy or you’re having trouble staying in control, stop for a minute and refocus. Here are three tools you can use to improve your attitude and get back on track:

1. Check your perspective.
Is your glass half-empty or half-full? It's a tired cliché, but sometimes it's a good ruler for judging your perceptions. Maybe you did fudge a little with dessert last Sunday, or you haven’t been eating all your salads and vegetables. You can acknowledge those things and still look on the bright side. Think about the good things you actually did: you drank your water and took your vitamins every day. You even managed to get in your exercise, despite the kids' crazy sports schedules. All these are markers of progress and serve as good reminders that maybe you're not as off-target as you might think.

2. Acknowledge your struggles.
There's no such thing as an easy road. Every choice you make means new challenges, and sometimes those choices are just downright hard to handle. That's okay. On days when you don't want to eat one more cup of yogurt, or make one more salad, allow yourself that feeling—don't run from it. Admit the things that are tough for you, but instead of giving in to them, use your head to come up with options and solutions. You might be surprised how the impossible becomes possible, if you only take the time to deal with the problem head on. And you'll be even more amazed at how empowered you feel once you find your way through.

3. Have faith in yourself.
Chances are, you've been through things a lot tougher than this. Personal struggles pepper our lives, and the weight loss battle is just another one of them. Changing a lifestyle that you've become used to takes a lot—maybe even more than you expected—but that doesn't mean you're not up to the task. Remember, you're in control here and getting stronger every day. Stay on track and realize that sheer desire is half the battle. The rest you can learn.
